We began in 1975 as a small sole proprietorship transporting rocks and stones for major international construction companies. Capitalising on the construction boom in 1970s, Koon Construction and Transport Co., Pte Ltd ("KCTC") was incorporated in 1979 with the purpose to raise fund in order to increase manpower and invest in new equipment. This in turn allowed us to upgrade our technical expertise, particularly in the area of reclamation and related works.
In 1985, we went into a joint venture with a major marine engineering company, Zinkcon, to form Koon-Zinkcon, which specialised in the protection of reclaimed shorelines. Zinkcon is part of Royal Boskalis Westminster nv ("Boskalis"), a major international dredging and offshore engineering firm.
We operate as a main contractor on many of our projects. On larger scale projects, particularly those of reclamation, we participate in joint ventures with other strategic partners with international reputation. For more than two decades, Koon has taken part in various land reclamation works which have helped expanded the land area of Singapore by about 20%. These completed projects now form the new coastal lines of Singapore.
They are at the NORTH - Punggol; SOUTH - Marina Bay, Tanjung Rhu, Sentosa Cove & Pasir Panjang; EAST - Changi and WEST - Jurong Island & Tuas View. Over the last couple of years, we have executed a high percentage of water, sewage and power projects. Amongst the more noticeable ones are:
In 2014, the Penta-Ocean/Koon Joint Venture, a joint venture between KCTC & Penta-Ocean Construction Company Ltd secured S$1.108 billion contract for the Land Preparation Works for Airport Development.
To support our infrastructure construction business, we have a wide range of construction machinery including crawler cranes, excavators, lorry cranes, tipper trucks, vibratory soil compactors, wheel loaders and grab dredgers. Our construction equipment includes a variety of pumps, such as pabool pumps, electrical submersible pumps, diesel water pumps, and chemical treatment plants. In addition, we also provide land-based transportation services.
We also have a range of grab dredges and other marine support vessels catering to the niche marine construction activities.
KCTC has grown significantly since 1979 and is now one of the largest domestic civil engineering, reclamation and shore protection specialists. In 2012, the Group has incorporated a new wholly-owned subsidiary in Malaysia - Koon Construction & Transport Sdn. Bhd. (“KCT”), which will be engaged in the business of civil engineering and building works.
